Slavery: A global perspective

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will continue its vhs.wissen live series on Wednesday, 24 March from 7.30 to 9 p.m. with an online lecture on the global history of slavery. In his lecture, historian and Africa scholar Andreas Eckert will use several examples to trace the history of slavery from antiquity to the 21st century. Alongside family and religion, slavery is probably one of the most widespread social phenomena in human history. While slavery is typically associated above all with plantation slavery in the American South, this term conceals a multitude of constellations, practices and relationships of dependency. Slavery was found in many parts of the world and at all times - and it is still with us today.
Prof Dr Andreas Eckert teaches at Humboldt University Berlin and was a visiting professor at Harvard University in 2007.
