Six million euros from the federal government for the refurbishment of the theatre

The city of Chemnitz is receiving 6 million euros from the federal government for the sustainable refurbishment of the listed Chemnitz theatre.

The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag decided today to provide the funding from the federal programme "Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture".

Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "With these funds, we can push ahead with the refurbishment of the theatre in financially difficult times - this is not a matter of course. This is also only possible thanks to the good cooperation with the members of the Bundestag, who pushed through this project application against many other competitors from Germany."

The funds will not only be used to carry out the fire protection refurbishment in the theatre, which has already been decided, but also to upgrade the building in terms of energy efficiency, technology and accessibility.

Background:

With the adoption of the 2022 federal budget, the German Bundestag is making programme funds amounting to 476 million euros available for the federal programme "Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture".

Annual instalments are planned until 2027 to enable the funding of multi-year investment projects by local authorities in the areas of sport, youth and culture that are of particular regional or supra-regional importance and of high quality in terms of their energy efficiency and climate change adaptation performance. The projects are also of particular importance for social cohesion and social integration in the municipality.
