Siren test alarm
New warning system goes live
On Saturday 3 September at 11 a.m. , the new and existing sirens in Chemnitz will be tested with a test alarm. A total of 22 sirens will be heard.
Mayor Ralph Burghart: "In order to be able to warn the population of dangers and emergencies, such as floods, in good time, we need a comprehensive and functional state-of-the-art warning system. The nationwide warning day in 2020 showed that there were still some gaps to be closed in Chemnitz. We have done our homework and invested in state-of-the-art technology. With the trial run, we now want to test whether it works well. The people of Chemnitz can and should hear this directly."
The city of Chemnitz has installed ten new electronic sirens and another new one is still under construction.
The electronic siren system is being expanded to include a central control system to ensure a double triggering option (redundancy) and to be able to monitor the functionality of the sirens and the alarms triggered.
In addition to a defined sound level, the electronic sirens are equipped with a battery backup, because in the event of a power failure it must still be possible to run through at least four warning and de-alarming cycles. The system also includes a digital siren control receiver, which is required for triggering the sirens by the integrated regional control centre and reproducing the standardised siren signals and will enable the sirens to be controlled via the TETRA BOS digital radio network. Warning texts can also be announced via these sirens.
The costs total €224,000, of which €131,350 is funding from the federal government's 2020-2022 economic stimulus and crisis management package.
The city of Chemnitz is once again taking part in the nationwide warning day with its warning system, which will take place on 8 December this year. On the joint federal and state action day, all warning devices will be triggered at 11 a.m. on the dot. The aim of this trial warning is to sensitise the population to the issue of warning in emergency situations. In addition, all those involved, such as federal, state and local authorities, as well as the media, practise the procedures for warning of danger.
