Silver monkey cub in the marmoset house at Chemnitz Zoo
Congratulations on the latest addition to Chemnitz Zoo: a little silver monkey has seen the light of day in the facility's marmoset house! A pair of silver monkeys from Krefeld and La Vallee des Singes zoos moved in here in April this year. Incidentally, this species of monkey had never been kept at Chemnitz Zoo before. Now there have been offspring for the first time. The cub was born on Tuesday, 13 November 2012 and the sex, according to the zoo, is still unknown.
Zoo manager Anja Dube: "The first few days in the life of a young animal are always somewhat critical, especially with a first birth. The situation is also stressful for the parent animals, so rest and privacy are very important for them. As far as the little silver monkey is concerned, the cub has developed well so far - and of course we hope that the cub continues to make such good progress! The parents have adapted well to their new role. However, they like to stay at the back of the enclosure and at first the cub, which is carried and cared for by both the mother and the father, was barely visible. But now the little family is quite easy to observe."
Silver monkeys are relatively small marmosets. They live in the primary and secondary rainforest in the eastern Amazon basin and feed on tree sap, fruit, insects, small vertebrates and eggs, among other things. The gestation period is around 145 days and twins are usually born, which are cared for by the entire family group.
