Sick lime tree on Louis-Schreiter-Straße has to be felled
A lime tree at Louis-Schreiter-Straße 14a in Rabenstein has been weakened by various pests and will have to be felled in the next few days. The tree is no longer stable due to two aggressive, root-borne fungi and is therefore a danger to passers-by and traffic, according to the Parks Department. This damage was discovered during one of the office's regular tree inspections.
The lime tree is not only severely damaged by a blight fungus, which has caused intensive white rot in the root area and at the base of the trunk. The experts also discovered a lacquer fungus at the base of the roots, which is a fungus that causes white rot in the rootstock as a wound and weakness parasite. Both parasites can accelerate the progression of rot in the root area.
Several lime trees in the Louis-Schreiter-Straße area have already had to be felled for safety reasons. Following the latest tree inspections, it is foreseeable that further felling will be necessary in the next two growing seasons due to a lack of stability and breakage. The Parks Department is therefore planning replanting for the 2017/2018 planting period.
