"Showplace" in the future Technical Town Hall

The future Technical City Hall was handed over to the city's central building management at the end of October by the Kellnberger Group, which constructed the building and leased it to the city of Chemnitz. Before the removal companies begin the largest move in the history of the city administration, citizens will have the opportunity to take a look inside their new Technical City Hall on Saturday, 18 November.

Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "I am delighted that the Contiloch has now been built on and another brownfield site is history. The project means that all city administration offices can now be found in the city centre. The people of Chemnitz are very curious and interested. I have therefore agreed with Mr Kellnberger that the citizens can visit the building on 18 November. It will still be empty and so the building can be inspected. Specialists will offer guided tours. Once the move has been completed, there will also be an open day 'with content' in April."

There will be guided tours (approx. 30 minutes) of the still empty building from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the motto "Schaustelle". You can see the future offices, visitor zones and the mayor's office. Guides will include Building Mayor Michael Stötzer and representatives of the Kellnberger Group, who will lead visitors through the building.

Interesting facts about the new Technical Town Hall

It took 22 months to build the new Technical Town Hall. Work began in January 2016 and the rental agreement with the City of Chemnitz is valid from 1 December for a period of 15 years. The rental costs amount to 8.90 euros/sqm. Compared to the current rent in the "old" Technical City Hall, this is a cost saving of 3.19 euros/sqm.

A total of 689 employees from the nine offices of Department 6, including the mayor, as well as the central post office and the in-house print shop, will move into the new building. The relocation of the offices/staff will start right at the beginning of the new year, on 2 January, and will last until the end of February. Work will continue in parallel so that hardly any restrictions are to be expected.

Of the total 18,000 square metres available in the new Technical City Hall building, the City of Chemnitz is using approx. 16,000 square metres with a total of 439 offices ranging in size from
11 to 35 square metres and 23 consultation rooms, which are generally 24 to 30 square metres in size. On the first floor of building A there is a large consultation room of approx. 120 square metres, which is intended for committees and similar. The rooms are equipped with particularly energy-efficient LED lights (approx. 2,600 in the offices and around 1,000 in the corridors). There are also 26 kitchenettes and a total of 25 toilet facilities (ladies and gents) and three barrier-free toilets (e.g. on the ground floor). The building has around 2,000 windows and around 1,000 doors have been installed. A total of 10 staircases and 7 lifts connect the five floors of the building.

During opening hours, visitors have access to all areas of the building via the main entrance (House A). A large overview of the building and a guidance system provide an overview of the individual offices and departments. The new technical town hall is divided into three houses, which are identified by a colour concept. (House A - red, House B - blue, House C - green). A tactile floor guidance system also enables blind and visually impaired people to move around the building independently. A security service assists visitors at a barrier-free counter. The building includes an 11,500 square metre underground car park with 272 parking spaces, 45 of which are visitor parking spaces. 13 parking spaces are prepared for electric vehicles, and bicycle parking spaces have also been set up in the underground car park.

The outdoor area on Bahnhofstrasse and Dresdner Strasse, which is owned by the city, will be completed from April 2018. The inner courtyard of the building will be completed by the Kellnberger group of companies by spring 2018.

If the city council approves a resolution proposed by several political groups at its meeting on 6 December, the new Technical City Hall will be given the address Friedensplatz 1.
