"Shipwreck" - The failure of European refugee policy
Lecture and discussion at the adult education centre with Wolfgang Grenz
On Tuesday, 5 April 2016 at 7 p.m., asylum expert and board member of the UN Refugee Agency Wolfgang Grenz will explain his views on European refugee policy at the adult education centre in the TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. Admission is free.
Ever since the Lampedusa tragedy in autumn 2013, in which over six hundred refugees died, Wolfgang Grenz has been clear: European refugee policy has failed. The governments of the European Union have actually agreed to create a common asylum system. But while Europe's internal borders are falling, its external borders are becoming impermeable. Those who nevertheless make it to Europe are often met with inadequate asylum procedures and unacceptable living conditions - including in Germany. In his lecture, Grenz explains why he believes that Europe is pursuing a misguided refugee policy that jeopardises the lives and rights of refugees.
Wolfgang Grenz worked full-time for Amnesty International from 1979 to 2013, most recently as Secretary General of Amnesty International Germany. He is a founding member of Pro Asyl and a board member of UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe.
