Secondary school Arno-Schreiter-Straße 1 receives new name
At its meeting today, the City Council decided that the secondary school at Arno-Schreiter-Straße 1 will be renamed Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule Chemnitz from the 2021/2022 school year.
The justification states: As an enlightened explorer, Humboldt was a man characterised by a thirst for knowledge who, as a polymath and with his love of nature, created a ground-breaking scientific network of his own. It is precisely the complexity of Humboldt's work and his impact as a pioneer of ecological thinking that leaves room for the development of the secondary school.
At the start of the 2018/19 school year, the city of Chemnitz opened the new secondary school - the former Werner Heisenberg Grammar School - initially as a branch of the Albert Schweitzer Secondary School. From 2020/2021, it formed an independent secondary school site. The building was renovated from 2016 to 2018.
The three-form entry school has space for 450 pupils. Inclusive teaching was taken into account during the refurbishment. Due to the positive trend in pupil numbers, a need for capacity had already become apparent since 2015, particularly in the secondary school sector. In April 2016, the city council therefore decided to build a new secondary school at the Arno-Schreiter-Straße 1 site.
Many different name suggestions were submitted by citizens, parents, teachers and pupils who were involved in the naming process in accordance with the naming guidelines for schools in the city of Chemnitz. At the end of last year, the school conference (school committee consisting of the school management, student, parent and teacher representatives) decided in favour of the name Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule Chemnitz.
