Second EU monitoring of Capital of Culture activities
Press briefing after the expert panel report expected on 5 July - ATTENTION: postponed to a later date*
Today, a team from the City of Chemnitz and the region, the Supervisory Board and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH presented the status of preparations for the European Capital of Culture year 2025 to a panel of experts from the European Commission. Participants included Lord Mayor Sven Schulze, the Mayor of Ehrenfriedersdorf Silke Franzl, Managing Director Andrea Pier and other stakeholders.
The digital meeting with the panel of experts consisting of ten international members accompanies the second monitoring report, which the City of Chemnitz submitted to the European Commission on 9 May. The report documents the current status of work and describes the upcoming tasks and challenges in preparation for the Capital of Culture year.
After a short presentation by the Chemnitz team, the experts asked questions on various areas of work - including the further development of the organisation, the implementation of the narrative, the first visible activities in the city and the cultural region, the relationship with the other Capital of Culture in 2025, Nova Gorica, the development of the first intervention areas, but also networking with stakeholders and partners in Europe and the region. The purpose of monitoring is not to directly compare the ECOC, but to share experiences and stimulate debate on common challenges and how to overcome them.
The European Commission's panel of experts is expected to publish its feedback on the Chemnitz monitoring report at the beginning of July. This will provide information on the remaining preparation process up to the 2025 programme year. Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Andrea Pier, Managing Director of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH, are expected to report on the results in a press conference on 5 July at 2 pm* once the expert panel's report is available.
Three EU monitoring reports accompany the European Capital of Culture process. The first report was submitted in autumn 2021, and Chemnitz must submit a final third report in autumn 2024.
* The jury report is not yet available. The press conference on 5 July has therefore been cancelled.
As soon as the report is available, an invitation to a press conference with Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Andrea Pier, Co-Managing Director of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH, will be issued at short notice. (added on 30 June 2023)
