Seating in front of smac: dugout to be installed by mid-April
After the successful opening of smac in the former Schocken department stores' and the redesign of Stefan-Heym-Platz, one point was still unresolved: the furnishing of the square, which should give the area more ambience and do justice to the aspirations of the building.
Work will now begin today, Wednesday, to create seating - specifically a dugout - on Stefan Heym Square. The dugout consists of two elements, one 10.50 metres long and the other 4.50 metres. The two bench sculptures are made of oak heartwood. Preparatory work will begin today to create a foundation for the two benches before the elements are delivered and installed by mid-April (17th calendar week). It was also necessary to reconcile the interests of public transport, cyclists and pedestrians as well as the requirements of the listed building.
The artistic design was created by Topotek 1 - Landscape Architects - Berlin. The production and realisation on site was entrusted to Kernholz GmbH - Berlin. As the owner of the Schocken, GGG is investing around 40,000 euros, while the city, as the owner of Stefan-Heym-Platz, is investing around 21,000 euros.
