Sculpture "On the balance beam" returns
Invitation for journalists: Unveiling on 19 June, 11 a.m., Marianne-Brandt-Oberschule, Vettersstraße 34
On the last day of school before the summer holidays, Wednesday 19 June at 11 a.m., the restored sculpture "Am Schwebebalken" will be unveiled at the Marianne-Brandt-Oberschule, Vettersstraße 34, in the presence of Mayor Michael Stötzer at an end-of-school party.
The sculpture was reinstalled in the newly designed schoolyard and thus in its original location.
Representatives of the media are invited to attend.
The bronze sculpture "Am Schwebebalken" was created in 1967 by the Chemnitz artist Johannes Belz (1925-1976) and erected in 1968 on the grounds of the then newly built Dr Theodor Neubauer School. The building was not used for many years and stood empty. To prevent vandalism and theft, the sculpture was dismantled in 2014 and moved to a municipal warehouse. The demolition of the Dr Theodor Neubauer School began in July 2020, followed by the construction of the new Marianne Brandt Secondary School, which has been in operation since August 2023.
The sculpture was restored by Chemnitz sculptor Erik Neukirchner, the grandson of Johann Belz, who also created the Chemnitz Klapperbrunnen fountain.
The artist's widow, Sonja Belz, the artist's daughters, Cora Belz and Ilona Neukirchner, the grandson and artist Erik Neukirchner and the former deputy headmaster of Dr Theodor Neukirchner School, Mr Görner, have also been invited to the unveiling.
Representatives of the school authority, the cultural organisation, the parks department and the company iproplan will also be present.
The costs for the restoration amount to approx. 5,700 euros. Including transport, foundations and anchoring, the costs amount to around 7,500 euros.
