Schools remain the focus of the city's construction activities
The Planning, Building and Environment Committee was informed about the status of the implementation of the school building programme
At its meeting yesterday, the Planning, Building and Environment Committee was informed by the administration about the further implementation of the City of Chemnitz's school building programme. The realisation of the ambitious 40 million programme is already foreseeable for the majority of the properties renovated with school construction funding from the Free State: At this point in time, around 65 per cent of the funds have been used. In the 2014 / 2015 school year, the school building construction programme and the large-scale project for schools for the physically disabled will involve a total investment of around 53.7 million euros, of which 13.5 million euros are subsidies and 40.1 million euros are the city's own funds. 29 measures are currently being realised, 14 measures are in the preparation and planning stage.
The twelve school facilities completed by the end of 2014 include the Grüna, Einsiedel, Sonnenberg, Gebrüder Grimm, Tereschkowa and Heinrich-Heine primary schools, the Altendorf primary and secondary school, the Josephinen secondary school and the J.-Heinrich-Pestalozzi and the Vocational School Centre for Business II. The work at Ebersdorf primary school is due to be completed by the end of October.
The handover of a further eight properties is planned for the second quarter of 2015, including the Georg Weerth secondary school and the Reichenbrand and Schönau primary and secondary schools. The complete refurbishment of the Ludwig Richter primary school is scheduled for completion in June 2015, while the construction work at the Untere Luisenschule/high school and Obere Luisenschule/primary school is scheduled for completion in August.
The city administration expects the general refurbishment of Rabenstein primary school, including the school building, sports hall and outdoor facilities, to be completed in the third quarter of 2015.
For the 2015/2016 school building construction programme - according to new good news yesterday - the city administration of Chemnitz has, following the funding notifications already received for drying out, roof and façade renovation, sanitary facilities in the amount of 2.5 million for the Abendoberschule/Abendgymnasium and 2.5 million for the Sprachheilschule Ernst Busch, the city council has now also received a favourable decision from the Free State for the complete renovation of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Grundschule.
City councillors and media representatives were recently able to find out more about the largest construction project in the Chemnitz school sector, the school for the physically disabled, during a tour of the construction site. This major project (not part of the school building programme) is currently around 65 percent complete. Of a total of 58 lots for the entire construction programme, 39 have been awarded and four have already been completed. In addition to the school, the new building for the special educational support centre - Chemnitz school for the physically disabled on the Heinrich-Schütz-Straße site includes a two-court sports hall with outdoor facilities, a residential home, all-day care for children and young people with physical and multiple disabilities as well as therapy rooms with a therapy pool and gymnastics room. The buildings will be completed in stages in spring 2015, while work on the outdoor facilities at the school site is scheduled for completion in summer 2015. A total of 32.6 million euros will be invested in the extensive construction project. The Free State is subsidising the construction with a total of 14.8 million euros. The city of Chemnitz itself is investing 17.8 million euros.
