Schools open with limited regular operations from 18 May 2020

The schools in Chemnitz will be open with limited regular operations from Monday, 18 May 2020. Compulsory school attendance applies again.

Mayor Ralph Burghart: "A good education is important for the best possible start to your future career. I am therefore all the more pleased that we will be able to take a further step towards a normal school day on 18 May and welcome all pupils back to Chemnitz schools, from primary schools to secondary schools and grammar schools. As the city's school authorities, we have used the time to create the necessary conditions in close coordination within the city and with the State Office for Schools and Education. This includes hygiene measures, from soap dispensers to towel dispensers, as well as markings and signs. School transport will be provided as usual, including special transport services. Here too, everyone must wear a face mask."

Involvement of parents

For a successful start to the school year, parents also need to help at this time. The schools will inform them in the coming days about how their individual school will organise the school day. This differs not only between the primary and secondary schools, but also within the school types themselves.

Furthermore, a so-called "health confirmation form" (pendulum sheet) will be required for primary school pupils to provide written proof that no general symptoms of illness are present.
symptoms of illness, in particular cough and/or increased body temperature. On this form, the parents or guardians sign that their child is healthy and free of symptoms. (Children are only to be sent to school free of symptoms.) It is essential to ensure that the "health certificate form" is carried daily and presented at school.

You can find the form under the following link: https://www.ssg-sachsen.de/fileadmin/Redaktion/02_Mitgliederbereich/Fachbereiche/R8/Corona-Virus/Tagesbriefe/2020-05-08_TB36_Anlage_5.1a_Formular_Gesundheitsbestaetigung_vorgetragen_fuer_Mai.pdf

Parents/guardians are asked to familiarise their children with coughing and sneezing etiquette, social distancing rules and increased hygiene (regular hand washing).

Infection protection measures in schools

Additional protective windows ("spit protection") have been provided for the secretaries' offices, all schools have been given a basic supply of protective gloves and additional soap and towel dispensers have been provided.

Ensuring the transport of pupils

Pupils are obliged to wear face masks both during transport on public transport and on the contracted school buses used by the City of Chemnitz as well as during special transport services.

The schools are responsible for supervising compliance after arrival at the school and at the bus stops in their immediate vicinity.
Public transport companies are only recommended to maintain the minimum distance if this is possible, taking into account the available capacities.

If pupils were entitled to transport in a contracted school bus or to use a special transport service before the coronavirus pandemic in accordance with the City of Chemnitz's statutes on school transport, they will continue to be scheduled for transport by the education authority. It is not possible to adapt journey times to individual needs.

All those involved in the process have a great responsibility, especially when it comes to daily school transport, regardless of the form in which it is used. Parents/guardians, transport companies, teachers and educators all have a part to play in ensuring that schools open on 18 May 2020.
