Schools and school sports halls fit for the start of the school year
New construction work begins again
The refurbishment work at the following schools and school sports halls was completed in time for the start of the school year so that they can go into operation at the start of term:
Heinrich Heine Primary School and Klaffenbach Primary School
The refurbishment of Heinrich Heine Primary School and the fire protection measures at Klaffenbach Primary School have been completed. Work on the outdoor facilities at Heinrich Heine Primary School has also been largely completed so that the pupils and teachers can put their freshly furnished school building into operation for the start of school.
A further approx. 4.9 million euros were invested in both buildings, of which around 1.5 million euros in funding from the Free State of Saxony for Heinrich Heine Primary School. Around 400,000 euros were invested in the interior of the Heinrich Heine primary school and around 160,000 euros in the Klaffenbach primary school. The Free State of Saxony is also contributing a total of around 380,000 euros via a federal funding programme.
Sports hall at Reichenhain primary school
The sports hall at Reichenhain primary school was extensively renovated to make it barrier-free. In addition to the needs-based interior remodelling and extension, the structural shell, i.e. the roof, façade, windows and doors, was renovated in terms of energy efficiency and structural engineering.
The outdoor facilities will be completed by the end of October 2021.
The costs of the project amount to €1.6 million, of which €1.1 million will be subsidised by the Free State of Saxony.
Sports hall of the Chemnitz school model
The sports hall of the Chemnitz school model was also extensively renovated to make it barrier-free. Among other things, the façade including external insulation and the roof were renovated and the windows and external doors were replaced. The sanitary facilities, building services, heating and electrical installations were also modernised.
The costs for this amount to 1.7 million euros, of which 1.1 million euros are subsidised by the Free State of Saxony.
The new school year marks the start of new construction work at the following schools:
Altchemnitz School
Construction work to renovate and extend the Altchemnitz special school will begin at the start of the school year. New rooms are needed for handicrafts, art, counselling and after-school care. The building also needs to be made barrier-free. A three-storey connecting building between the north and south wings of the school is favoured for the extension. This will create an additional area of 260 to 290 square metres. As part of the refurbishment, the roof of the sports hall, the clinker brick façade on the old building and the interior rooms and ceilings in the building will be renovated. The extensive construction work will last until 2025.
During this period, the school will be relocated to Philippstraße 20.
The costs of this measure amount to 9.1 million euros and will be subsidised by the Free State of Saxony with 5 million euros.
Co-operation school
A new school building for a two-form entry combination primary and secondary school is being built on the site on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße on the former barracks grounds between the Terra Nova Campus and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien.
The new school building is set to open as a "special kind of school" in the 2023/24 school year. The school complex will be a three-storey building with an adjoining two-court sports hall. Its location, connecting corridors, bicycle parking spaces, covered break areas and canopies for the school and after-school care entrances will create a self-contained square.
Special attention is being paid to sustainable construction in the new school project. In addition to the use of geothermal energy and a photovoltaic system, a retention roof ensures that rainwater is retained on the roof surfaces.
The construction costs amount to around 34 million euros and are being financed entirely from the City of Chemnitz's own funds. Funding for the project has been applied for.
