School renovations on Sonnenberg - assembly work with 65-tonne crane in the inner courtyard tomorrow Ludwig-Kirsch-Straße 27 and 29
City invests around 4.5 million euros in work to be completed by the end of 2014 at the neighbouring Sonnenberg primary school and Johann-Heinrich-Pestalozzi learning support centre
In 2013/14, the city of Chemnitz will invest a total of around 4.5 million euros in the neighbouring schools located at Ludwig-Kirsch-Straße 27 and 29 in the Sonnenberg district of Chemnitz, including the Sonnenberg primary school with sports hall and the J. H. Pestalozzi learning support centre. The funds come from the special school refurbishment programme in Saxony and are 40 percent subsidised by the SAB.
As part of the refurbishment work, measures for structural fire protection, energy-efficient façade and roof refurbishment, drainage and window replacement will be realised.
The renovation work at the Johann-Heinrich-Pestalozzi learning support centre was started by the companies commissioned by the City of Chemnitz, Building Management and Structural Engineering Department, just in time for the planned start of construction at the beginning of the 2013 autumn holidays. The work is being carried out parallel to school operations, which means that many of the companies involved can only work in the second shift from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
To create second structural escape routes, walkways made of a self-supporting steel structure are to be built across the inner courtyard between the two schools. These escape routes must also be available during the construction work, which means that the walkways are the first components to be constructed that are completely ready for use. As the inner courtyard for the approx. nine metre long bridges cannot be reached through the buildings, the first elements will be lifted into place and assembled over the roof of the Pestalozzi School tomorrow (Friday 29 November) with the help of the 65-tonne crane set up on site today. The lifting and assembly is scheduled to take place tomorrow from late morning and at lunchtime - representatives of the media, especially photographers, are cordially invited to be on site.
The entire school playground is required for the preparation and realisation of the work. In order to ensure that the work with the crane can be carried out safely, the school management of the special needs centre has scheduled one of the two school-free days for tomorrow, Friday.
The work on the overall measures should be completed at both schools by the end of 2014. The Neukirchen-based company Schmiede-Metallbau Prüfer from Neukirchen was commissioned with the realisation. The planning for the Pestalozzi Support Centre was the responsibility of the Chemnitz-based firm ABK Architekten GmbH. The planning for the Sonnenberg primary school with sports hall was carried out by studio2 architekten, Chemnitz.
