School network planning for the city of Chemnitz adopted
New primary and secondary schools to be built
At its meeting yesterday, the City Council adopted the school network plan for primary, special and secondary schools, grammar schools and second-chance schools in Chemnitz. The city's duty as a school authority is to provide sufficient school places and non-teaching staff.
According to Section 23a of the Saxon School Act, the school network plan must be drawn up by each independent city. The aim is to offer a balanced range of school facilities with a high level of education, making full use of all capacities. The adopted school network plan represents the current situation for the 2017/2018 school year and looks at the medium and long-term development up to the 2027/2028 school year.
There are currently 39 primary schools run by the City of Chemnitz. These are divided into nine school districts. The city is also responsible for ten special schools, twelve secondary schools, seven grammar schools and two secondary schools, one community school and seven vocational school centres.
By 2023, an additional four primary schools and four secondary schools will be created through the renovation of former school buildings and new buildings in order to cope with the increasing number of pupils. In the primary school sector, this concerns the former vocational school on Weststrasse/Reichsstrasse and the former Dürer School on Charlottenstrasse, which will be reopened as two-form entry primary schools in 2022 and 2023 respectively following a complete refurbishment. In addition, a new two-form entry primary school is planned to be built on the southern Sonnenberg by 2023.
Additional capacity will be created in the secondary school sector with the planned construction of a new four-form entry secondary school on Hartmannplatz by 2022, the construction of a new secondary school in the west of Chemnitz by 2023 and the complete refurbishment of the former Dr Theodor Neubauer School on Vettersstrasse, also planned for 2023.
On the site next to the Terra Nova Campus in Heinrich-Schütz-Straße, the city is planning to establish a combined school site. A two-form entry primary school and a two-form entry secondary school are to be built here in the immediate vicinity of each other by 2023.
Mobile classrooms are to be used on a temporary basis to cover the increasing demand until all renovation and new construction projects have been completed.
In total, the city will invest around 145 million euros by 2024 to create modern teaching conditions for the young people of Chemnitz.
