School hostel in Küchwaldpark receives new wastewater system

Paths from the school hostel to the engine shed closed during the track work

At the beginning of this week, construction work began on the new drainage system for the school hostel in Küchwaldpark. The existing drainage system (mixed water pipe) in the direction of Schönherrstraße is very badly damaged in places and its function is no longer guaranteed in some cases. The drainage concept for the listed Küchwaldpark, Chemnitz's largest park, was further developed and adapted to the latest requirements.

For this reason, a new drainage route is being built as a pressurised pipeline. The pipeline route runs along the existing paths from the Schullandheim to the existing sewer at the level of the park railway shed. The construction work is being carried out as a coordinated construction project with eins energie in Sachsen, i.e. empty conduits for new lighting for the paths and a fibre optic cable are being laid in a sewer at the same time.

Laying the route will take around two weeks. During this time, the paths between the engine shed and the school hostel cannot be used.

The pipes that lead from the final pressure pipe shaft, cross the district heating route and the park railway and go right up to the school dormitory will be laid using a closed construction method (horizontal directional drilling). For this reason, only a maximum of five smaller excavation pits (head holes as start and finish pits) are required in the area of the paths.
The existing trees and shrubs will be preserved as far as possible. No tree felling is planned for the construction work. Pruning and clearing work on shrubs and wild growth will only be required in some areas around the construction pits.

This will be followed by construction work to renew and connect the wastewater pipe to a new pump shaft in the grounds of the school dormitory.

The construction work should be largely completed by 20 May 2020. Remaining landscaping work will be completed by 10 June 2020.

The total costs for planning and construction work amount to approx. 260,000 euros and will be borne proportionately by the city of Chemnitz and eins Energie in Sachsen.

The new plant was planned by the Chemnitz-based company CIC, Chemnitzer Ingenieurbau Consult GmbH, which has also been commissioned to supervise the construction work. The construction work is being carried out by the construction company Günter Pompe GmbH from Hohenstein-Ernstthal.
