School festival week to mark the anniversary: 125 years of Altchemnitz school
Festive event and open day, project day "School in the past", sports day and school disco are on the programme from 22 to 26 September
Pupils, teachers, parents and members of the Altchemnitz School - School for Learning Support Association are celebrating the 125th anniversary of their school with a school festival week from 22 to 26 September 2014 and have prepared a programme to mark the occasion: There will be a project day entitled "School in the past" (Monday, 22 September, 8 a.m. to 12 noon), a sports day entitled "School in motion" (Wednesday, 24 September, 8 a.m. to 12 noon).8 am to 12 noon), a school disco (also on Wednesday, 24 September, 5 pm to 8 pm) and an open school party with an open day (Friday, 26 September, 3 pm to 6.30 pm) to round off the festive week.
The celebratory event to mark the school's anniversary, which will be attended by Mayor Philipp Rochold and Jörg Heynoldt, Head of the Chemnitz Regional Office of the Saxon Education Agency, will take place on Tuesday, 23 September at 3 pm in the auditorium of the Altchemnitz school (Schulstraße 2, 09125 Chemnitz).
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to all offers and events of the school festival week.
Headmistress Ines Bäurich provides information on the school and its history: " At the Altchemnitz School - School for Learning Support, 200 children and young people with special educational needs specialising in learning currently attend classes 1 to 9.
The central building of the now 125-year-old school was opened on 23 September 1889 as a new primary school in the former village of Altchemnitz. After the incorporation into Chemnitz (1894), the southern wing was built a few years later in 1899 and the northern wing and gymnasium between 1907 and 1909. The extensions had become necessary due to the sharp increase in pupil numbers: in 1912, 1,771 children were taught in 42 classes at the Altchemnitz school. During this time, four additional classrooms were built in the gymnasium to accommodate the classes. The classes were also divided into morning and afternoon lessons. During the Second World War, night watches were set up in the building: Teachers and caretakers stayed in the school in case of a bomb scare. On the night of 14 February 1945, the Altchemnitz school was also hit during a bombing raid. Incendiary bombs set fire to the roof truss and all the window panes were smashed. The night watchmen managed to extinguish the fires, but lessons had to be cancelled. Nevertheless, according to the chronicle, the night watchmen's efforts caused relatively little damage, so that classes could begin again in October 1945 after the end of the war. When the GDR was founded, the Altchemnitz school became a polytechnic secondary school and was given the name "August Bebel" in 1985. With reunification and the associated change in the school landscape, the school became a primary school from 1992 to 1999, and in 1993 the newly opened special school moved into the now 125-year-old building.
