For children in Chemnitz who will be of school age in 2026, the City of Chemnitz's Office for Health and Prevention will carry out a school entrance examination in addition to school registration. The school entrance examination is a compulsory examination that enables the assessment of the child's level of development and the early detection of problems. This enables early and needs-orientated support to be initiated.
It is now possible to book an appointment for the school entrance examination. Appointments can only be booked online via the City of Chemnitz's participation portal at www.chemnitz.de/termin_schulaufnahmeuntersuchung
It is also necessary to make an appointment for a new school entrance examination for children who were deferred in the previous year.
Important note: Due to the planned refurbishment of the premises of the Office for Health and Prevention, the school entrance examination cannot take place directly at the office. The specific examination location will be announced in good time. Parents are requested to obtain information on the website of the City of Chemnitz or directly in the participation portal.
Statistics on the school entrance examination for school starters in 2025
In the past school entry examinations for children who will be of school age this year, 2402 children were examined in Chemnitz within the scheduled examination period. Of these, 317 children were examined again as they had been deferred in the previous year.
The most frequent abnormalities were found in the areas of speech/language (30.5 per cent), hand-eye coordination (26.3 per cent) and physical coordination (20.5 per cent).
As a result, the majority of the children examined were recommended for primary school (84.8 per cent). For a proportion of the children examined, a deferral was recommended (11.9 per cent) or special educational needs were identified (3.3 per cent). The language and learning specialisms are particularly well represented among these special educational needs.
