"Schilling figures" are unveiled again
The sandstone figures "Four Times of Day" created by Johannes Schilling will be regularly freed from their winter protection, the so-called enclosure, on Tuesday, 12 April 2016.
Media representatives who would like to take a photo of this unveiling are invited to attend the event. The work to remove the acrylic glass protection from the four sculpture groups will begin at 9.30 am.
After removal of the enclosures by Kran Walther and employees of the Parks Department, the protective covers will then be cleaned, repaired and stored in the Parks Department's technical workshops.
The "Schilling Figures" are among the artistic and sculptural gems from the classicist period that are known far beyond Chemnitz. The four groups of figures were created as allegories of the times of day by the well-known sculptor Johannes Schilling (1828-1910) from Mittweida. The sculptures made of Postelwitz Elbe sandstone symbolise the times of day "The Morning", "The Noon", "The Evening" and "The Night". In 1905, the originals made of Postelwitz sandstone were replaced by bronze casts (duplicates) on Brühl's Terrace in Dresden and Chemnitz received the more valuable originals.
