Schillerplatz in the centre of Chemnitz can now be fully used again. The square, which has been completely renovated in accordance with monument protection regulations, now has newly designed recreational areas that invite people to linger.
Schillerplatz in Chemnitz city centre is not only the oldest, but also one of Chemnitz's most iconic parks with its neighbouring public buildings such as the opera house, technical university and university library. It was completely renovated in time for the Capital of Culture year 2025. Schillerplatz now presents itself as a place to meet, socialise, experience and enjoy.
The design highlight is the paved main axis, which is lined by a completed avenue of trees and crosses the square for 120 metres.
For users in a hurry, 600 metres of comfortable paths have been laid out to cross the square, which also invite you to stroll and discover the new plants. The new network of paths away from the main axis was equipped with a water-bound surface layer.
The eleven trees that had to be felled at the start of the construction work were offset by nine new plantings. In addition, 72 rhododendrons were transplanted and 305 new rhododendrons were planted. In addition, 770 shrubs and roses as well as various perennials were planted on Schillerplatz.
The work was carried out by the company Grünanlagen Uwe Pügner from Schwarzenberg. The planning and construction supervision was carried out by the planning office Neumann Gusenburger Landschaftsarchitekten from Berlin.
The costs for the creation of Schillerplatz totalled around 1.1 million euros. Two thirds of the project was funded as part of the urban development funding programme Growth and Sustainable Renewal - Shaping Vibrant Neighbourhoods (WEP) of the State Ministry for Regional Development.
