Schedule for the week from 3 to 9 March 2014

Monday, 3 March
Banners designed by Chemnitz schoolchildren for Chemnitz Peace Day 2014 will be displayed at City Hall. Representatives of the media are cordially invited to the on-site photo session (PM 106 from 28 February 2014). The textile painting ground for the banners was sponsored by the Saxon Textile Research Institute and the colours were purchased with financial support from the Local Action Plan. Gerald Richter, representative of the Aktion C initiative and co-signatory of the call to citizens to take part in Chemnitz Peace Day 2014, will be present at around 11 a.m. when the banners are put up.

CVAG is also supporting the 16th Chemnitz School Theatre Week with advertising on buses. The advertising will be handed over with a photo session in which pupils from the theatre group of the Untere Luisenschule/Oberschule will also take part. Mayor Barbara Ludwig accepts the invitation to the laying of the foundation stone for the Reitbahnhaus of Heim gGmbH. The construction project will be realised on the open space between Annaberger-, Gustav-Freytag- and Fritz-Reuter-Straße. In future, the Reitbahnhaus will bring together intergenerational programmes under one roof.

Representatives of the Saxon Carlowitz Society commemorate the 300th anniversary of Hans Carl von Carlowitz's death on 3 March 1714 at the memorial stele. Carlowitz, born in Oberrabenstein in 1645, is regarded as the founder of the modern concept of sustainability.

Tuesday, 4 March

Mayor Philipp Rochold opens the festive event for the awarding of the Chemnitz Peace Prize 2014 on behalf of the Lord Mayor (PM 107 from 28 February 2014).

Wednesday, 5 March

Chemnitz Peace Day 2014: Numerous events are taking place in Chemnitz to mark Peace Day - here is an overview, current details at www.chemnitz.de and www.chemnitzer-friedenstag.org:

  • 9 a.m., Municipal Cemetery: Mayor Barbara Ludwig attends the event to commemorate the victims of the destruction of Chemnitz in the Second World War. Two Chemnitz schoolchildren will speak in remembrance.
  • from 11 a.m., Neumarkt am Rathaus: exhibitions and activities on the memorial and action area Peace Cross.
  • around 1.30 pm, Falkeplatz: city tour to sites of National Socialist crimes.
  • 4 p.m., at the main railway station: citizens of the city meet to demonstrate with the alliance "Chemnitz Nazifrei"; the Chemnitz University of Technology student council is also organising a demonstration from 4 p.m. - meeting point at the TU canteen, Reichenhainer Straße.
  • around 4.30 pm, Rosenhof community centre: literature and music on the subject of war and peace.
  • 5 p.m., Town Hall foyer: Pupils recite "Rhymes against the right", concert by the "StreichHölzer" and the string quartet of the municipal music school.
  • 5 p.m., meeting point at the Friedens-, Probstei-, Kreuz-, St. Petri- and Markuskirche churches: Citizens form up for the Peace Paths to Neumarkt. There will also be a peace prayer service in the Lutherkirche and a peace service in the Jakobikirche at 8pm.
  • 6 p.m., Neumarkt am Rathaus: Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig welcomes citizens to the central rally on Chemnitz Peace Day 2014, with Dr Christoph Dittrich, General Director of Chemnitz Municipal Theatre, giving the keynote speech. Dr Sadik Al Biladi, a doctor from Iraq who has lived in Chemnitz for many years and winner of the 2009 Chemnitz Peace Prize, will then speak about the global refugee problem and the consequences for our society.
  • 9 p.m.: The bells of Chemnitz churches will ring at 9 p.m. to commemorate the destruction of Chemnitz on 5 March 1945.

Thursday, 6 March

Mayor Barbara Ludwig chairs the meeting of the working group on securing skilled labour.

Friday, 7 March

Mayor Barbara Ludwig takes part in the association meeting of the Central Saxony Transport Association (ZVMS).

Saturday, 8 March

Invitation to a discussion with contemporary witnesses on the occasion of the finissage of the exhibition "The Women's Prison of Hoheneck". The discussion with Sabine Popp will be led by Hanka Kliese, Member of the Bundestag and member of ASF Chemnitz, co-organiser of the exhibition (PM 70 from 12.02.2014).

Mayor Barbara Ludwig will give a welcoming address at the opening of the 23rd Days of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz. The Culture Days are being organised under the patronage of the Mayor of Chemnitz from 8 to 23 March 2014. Note for the media: You will receive a separate press release on this.

Premiere of the opera "Norma" by Vincenzo Bellini with Annemarie Kremer in the title role. Christopher Alden is responsible for the staging of the performance in Italian with German surtitles; Felix Bender is the musical director.
