Saxon author as a guest in the city library
Heike Geißler reports on her experiences as a seasonal employee at Amazon in the run-up to Christmas
For the author and translator Heike Geißler in need of money, it is a moment of misery; for everyone else, it is a literary stroke of luck. The author will be reading from her book "Saisonarbeit" on 26 November 2015 at 7:30 pm in the district library in the Vita-Center. Admission is free.
What Heike Geißler experiences and writes down in the weeks before Christmas is many things at once: a report on her experiences that is as personal as it is political. A criticism of the circumstances with the means of self-irony. A look into a hall that is sealed off from the outside world and therefore reveals a lot about it.
Saisonarbeit" is about sensitivity and the political nature of sensitivity. It is about the book as a place of refuge in a warehouse where the difference between a book and a rubber duck is irrelevant. And it's about working at Amazon and the fact that "there is something fundamentally wrong with this work and many types of work".
Heike Geißler was born in Riesa in 1977 and grew up there and in Chemnitz. She was awarded the Alfred Döblin Prize in 2001 for her first novel "Rosa". In 2008, she took part in the Ingeborg Bachmann competition. She lives as a freelance writer in Leipzig.
The reading is part of the project "Literaturforum Bibliothek - Autoren aus Sachsen in sächsischen Bibliotheken" organised by the German Library Association/Saxon State Association and the Saxon Literature Council, funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
"Saisonarbeit" was published in October 2014 by Spector Books in Leipzig.
