Safe journey to school in the new school year
Measures taken by the school road safety working group - school year 2015/2016
The summer holidays in Saxony end next weekend. On Monday 8 August, many pupils will be making their own way to school again.
To ensure that they can do this safely, the City of Chemnitz Civil Engineering Department is working with representatives from the traffic authority, the road construction authority, traffic planningThe City of Chemnitz Civil Engineering Department is constantly working on suggestions and changes to eliminate potential danger spots and deficiencies in road traffic.
This year, evaluations of questionnaires from parents on the way to school were used to update the school route maps for primary schools, indicating hazards and safe routes.

The following measures, for example, were implemented to increase safety on routes to school in the city of Chemnitz:
- Pedestrian crossing on Dorfstraße in Glösa for pupils at Glösa primary school.
- Footpath construction to Rabenstein primary school on Trützschler Straße.
- Pedestrian crossing also on Trützschler Straße.
- To improve visibility, parking spaces were reduced on Wartburgstrasse at the level of the pavement to the student residences.
- A safety railing was installed on Bernsdorfer Strasse/Pappelstrasse to eliminate an unsafe railway crossing.
- Centre island for safe crossing on Zwickauer Straße at the Friedhofstraße stop and on Waldenburger Straße/corner of Kochstraße.
- Temporary parking bans as so-called "parent stops" were introduced on Fürstenstraße, Park OdF, Harthweg, Dittersdorfer Straße, Albert-Schweitzer-Straße, Ludwig-Kirsch-Straße and Gießerstraße.
- Improved visibility at the Heinrich-Schütz-Straße/ Yorckstraße junction by extending the restricted stopping ban.
- Salzstraße, Küchwaldstraße - better signposting of the route to school through the use of white support boards, short-term parking spaces for parents in front of the Schlossschule.
- There are plans to widen the pavement at the Schlossberg crossing point in order to achieve even better crossing and visibility conditions.
