Safe journey to school in the new school year
Measures of the AG School Road Safety - Invitation to the press event: Mayor Miko Runkel hands over DEKRA children's caps at Schönau primary school on 10 August at 9.30 a.m.
The summer holidays in Saxony end next weekend and the 2017/2018 school year begins. Many pupils will be making their own way to school again on Monday, 7 August.
In particular, the implementation of the new road traffic regulations on speed limits of 30 km/h (Section 45(9)(6)) in the immediate vicinity of primary, special and secondary schools, grammar schools, after-school care centres and day nurseries as well as retirement and nursing homes and hospitals on main roads is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 or the test results will be fully available. Of the currently relevant 183 building addresses, a realisation status of over 90 percent has already been achieved. The Kepler Grammar School, the Fröbel Special Needs School and three senior citizens' facilities are currently under review.
School routes in the interactive city map
In order to make the school route maps for primary schools even more attractive and clearer for parents and pupils, the current school route maps for the individual primary schools are available as an interactive application at www.chemnitz.de/Schulweg under the heading "Quick selection - school route maps". By entering the parents' individual places of residence in Chemnitz or a specific school, parents or pupils can select very specific routes to school.
Traffic lights, crossing aids (such as pedestrian crossings, central islands, etc.) and existing dangerous spots are displayed as images at the click of a mouse and help parents to find the best and safest route to school for their child.
School route maps in the interactive city map
Together with various offices and departments of the city administration, the Chemnitz police department, the Chemnitz transport authority and the traffic organisation Verkehrswacht e. V., the working group on school route safety has created the data basis for the interactive city map and is constantly updating it.
In addition, the following measures were implemented in the past school year to increase safety on school routes in the city of Chemnitz:
- Construction of pedestrian traffic lights on Reichsstraße/Stephanplatz for the Gebrüder Grimm primary school
- Construction of a new footpath from Krummen Weg to Stelzendorfer Straße 270
- Time-limited, restricted stopping ban and short-term parking spaces (so-called parent parking spaces) on Harthweg (Rabenstein primary school), Lennéstraße (Reichenbrand primary school), Augsburger Straße (H.-Heine-GS), Hoffmannstraße (Pablo-Neruda-GS)
- Widening of the pavement at the Salzstraße/Schloßberg crossing point to achieve better crossing and visibility conditions.

Invitation to the press event:
On Thursday, 10 August at 9.30 a.m., Mayor Miko Runkel will hand over signal red DEKRA children's caps to the children starting school at Schönau Primary School, Guerickestraße 38, as part of the European Road Safety Charter. Representatives of the media are cordially invited to this event.
