Measures of the AG School Road Safety
In a few days, the summer holidays in Saxony will end and the 2018/2019 school year will begin. On Monday, 13 August, many pupils will be making their own way to school again. To ensure that they can do this safely, the City of Chemnitz's Civil Engineering Department is constantly working with representatives of the traffic authority, the road construction authority, traffic planning, the Chemnitz police department, the education authority, the Chemnitz transport companies, the public order office and the traffic watch organisation on measures to eliminate potential danger spots and road defects.
The school route maps for primary schools and after-school centres have been updated and are now even more attractive and clearer for parents and pupils. An interactive city map can be used on the City of Chemnitz Internet portal - www.chemnitz.de under the heading "Life in Chemnitz - Schools - Important information for parents". By entering the parents' individual places of residence in Chemnitz or a specific school, parents or pupils can select very specific routes to school. Existing dangerous places, crossing aids such as pedestrian crossings, central islands etc. are displayed as images at the click of a mouse and help parents to find the best and safest route to school for their child.
The following measures were implemented in the past school year:
The speed limit of 30 km/h in accordance with the new StVO was enforced at 17 schools with the installation of traffic signs.
The construction of new pavements at Stiftsweg 116 to Max-Saupe-Straße 103 and Wittgensdorfer Straße 121 to Paul-Fischer-Weg as well as a new pedestrian crossing on Wittgensdorfer Straße ensured safe routes to school.
There is a new pedestrian crossing on Obere Hauptstraße in Wittgensdorf.
A time-limited, restricted stopping ban and short-term parking spaces (so-called The safety of school routes on Ludwig-Kirsch-Straße (Sonnenberg primary school, Pestalozzi special school), Reichsstraße (Friedrich-Fröbel special school), Bornaer Straße (Waldorf school) and Hoffmannstraße (Pablo-Neruda-GS) has been improved.
The construction of central islands on Hofer Strasse 4, Zwickauer Strasse 303, Adorfer Strasse and Oberfrohnaer Strasse also helped to improve school road safety
Improved visibility when crossing the road was realised by the construction of footpath projections on Salzstraße/Schloßstraße, Barbarossastraße/Walter-Oertel-Straße.
This year, footpath projections are also planned for Hans-Ziegler-Straße, Emil-Rosenow-Straße/Enzmannstraße and Agricolastraße/Kanzlerstraße.
