"Sachsenhalle" gets a fresh look: The façade is insulated
The "Sachsenhalle" in Kappel will be scaffolded at the end of February, but work on the façade can only begin when the weather is free of frost and snow. The city has commissioned the company Ebert Bau Berga GmbH & Co KG with this project. They will renovate and insulate the outer skin of the sports complex in accordance with energy-saving regulations. Following this, the appearance of the Sachsenhalle is to be modernised. The sports building will be given a contemporary look in shades of red and grey.
The south-west façade, which visitors can see from the car park, will in future be adorned with handball players as a reference to the sport that is played particularly intensively in this complex.
Doors, including the entrance door, are also to be replaced in connection with the façade renovation. The sports hall's lightning protection system had already been modernised in the run-up to the current construction project.
As a venue for popular, competitive and school sports, the "Sachsenhalle" plays a central role in the city's sports development plan.
The large gymnasium is specified there, as well as in the 2020 urban development concept, as a sports facility for long-term use. This is all the more important as it is one of the most important training and competition venues for ball sports in Chemnitz. Competitions organised by the handball association are held here at weekends. In addition to training purposes, the Sachsenhalle is also used for supra-regional sporting events.
For this reason, the city had already renovated the roof of the complex in 2008 and later also the ventilation system, and more recently the hall ceiling was renewed. The old wooden acoustic elements were replaced by a lighter acoustic ceiling. In this context, the building was upgraded in terms of fire protection and its evacuation facilities were brought up to date.
The hall floor still urgently needs to be overhauled. The city has allocated funds for this in the current budget and applied for funding from the state. If these are approved, the sports floor could also be replaced this year.
In addition, the sanitary facilities in the functional building, which was built in 1976, will need to be modernised over the next few years. However, there is currently no specific date for this. This is because most of the construction work inside the hall has to take place during the summer months or when it is closed so that the Sachsenhalle can continue to be used for school and club sports as well as for training and competitions.
