Call for companies in Chemnitz to take part in a survey
Companies in Chemnitz that offer out-of-home drinks (to go) are invited to take part in a survey on the topic of reusable cups by 20 March 2022.
From 1 January 2023, a law will come into force requiring companies to offer packaging that can be used multiple times in addition to disposable plastic packaging. (Sections 33, 34 of the Packaging Act)
Chemnitz University of Technology has conducted a survey to determine the interest in and need for a standardised reusable cup system among Chemnitz companies. In order to obtain a representative result, companies are asked to participate in the survey in as large numbers as possible.
The aim of the survey is to
- record the number of "to go" providers in Chemnitz,
- estimate the quantity of "to go" beverage cups dispensed,
- identify future voluntary corporate partners and inform them about the project at an early stage and
- determine the need for initial equipment.
In August 2018, the City of Chemnitz was commissioned by the City Council to develop a concept for a reusable cup system for Chemnitz together with local players and stakeholders from the retail sector, Chemnitzer Wirtschaftsförderungs- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (CWE) and environmental organisations in order to reduce the use of disposable cups (BA-033/2018). The survey results will be incorporated into the concept development.
Disposable cups have a particularly poor environmental footprint. In Germany alone, around 2.8 billion disposable cups are used for coffee-to-go every year. That's around 34 per capita - for hot drinks alone*. Many of these disposable cups end up carelessly discarded in the countryside or on streets and squares, including in Chemnitz. Many cities in Germany have already established reusable cup systems.
