Restriction of use for Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool

Limited stability of the swimming pool - City of Chemnitz and structural engineer agree on immediate measures for temporary operation until July 2017

At the end of November, a new inspection of the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool took place with a structural engineer and a structural engineer to form a joint opinion on the stability of the swimming pool and the areas around the pool. The result of this on-site visit is that the stability of the swimming pool and the pool surrounds is no longer guaranteed and that the structural design of the affected components could fail. The Education and Sports Department therefore already upgraded the pool surrounds in spring 2015 in accordance with structural specifications. In addition, the following measures have now been agreed with the structural engineer and will be implemented immediately:

Parts of the pool surrounds will be structurally strengthened again and the pool will be fitted with survey marks. Every fortnight, the swimming pool and the areas around the pool will be measured for changes in position in order to identify any changes to the structure immediately. In this case, the immediate closure of the building under building regulations would be unavoidable.

The aim of the measures is to maintain swimming pool operations until July 2017. Competitions are still possible in the indoor swimming pool, but spectators are no longer permitted. The municipal hall staff will be instructed on this and must ensure that only active athletes and their coaches are granted access. This regulation applies with immediate effect for the safety of all those involved.

The municipal sports association and the clubs that use the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool as well as the city council's planning, construction and environment committee have been informed of the unavoidable measures by the education and sports department.

The Education and Sports Office will coordinate a solution with the users of the swimming pools, clubs and TU beyond the 2017 summer holidays and take the new situation into account in the booking plans. The aim is to distribute the unavoidable restrictions equally.
