Residential neighbourhood in the Heckert area is being further beautified
The renovation of the façade of the "Sachsenhalle" in Kappel begins in March. With this second construction phase, the reconstruction of this important sports complex, which has been underway for several years, continues.
In the meantime, the city is beautifying the area surrounding the Sachsenhalle.
Residents from Kappel and Helbersdorf will be informed about new projects by the Parks Department near their homes at the citizens' forum on 23 February at 5 pm in the Ikarus-Treff, Dr.-Salvador-Allende-Straße 34.
Kappel: What has been done so far?
The Ikarus Boulevard was renovated back in 2010. The city also had the fountain in front of the Sachsenhalle renovated at the request of local residents. It had become desolate due to weathering, uncontrolled growth and vandalism. Basins such as the electrical and water installations were repaired. The area around the fountain was planted and a photovoltaic system was installed on the canopy of the Sachsenhalle to sustainably reduce its operating costs.
New project at the Sachsenhalle
The city is now having even better paths designed along the Ikarus Promenade and the so-called "kitchen cube" as well as in front of the Sachsenhalle. The Parks Department also wants to optimise the visual axis between Sachsenhalle and the so-called "Green Fugue". To open up the view, shrubs are to be cut back and perennial areas created and planted. Some spruce, birch and ash trees that have grown wild in the flower beds will also have to be felled.
In October, the city put the demolition of old footpaths and their renewal out to public tender. It also commissioned the refurbishment of a pavilion.
In addition, 123 shrubs are to be planted and over 1,000 square metres of area embellished with perennials and ground cover.
The contract for the project at the Sachsenhalle and for another in Helbersdorf was awarded to Tiefbau Böhm from Chemnitz. In order to create construction clearance and space for new paths before the birds breed, the company will cut down the trees mentioned.
Depending on the weather, the contractor will begin the actual project in March at a cost of 103,000 euros. It should be completed this summer.
Helbersdorf: Chemnitz's first "urban forest"
In line with the district development concept (SEKo), the city is also realising another project to improve the residential environment. In the future, the city park and Kappel Park as well as allotment gardens are to be connected. This idea is now being pursued with a project between Scheffelstraße and Friedrich-Hähnel-Straße. There, in a valley, is a green area with partly woodland-like areas. The area extends over a former school site and a youth leisure centre.
In the so-called Scheffelschlucht, Chemnitz's first "urban forest" is now being created as a model project in the middle of a densely populated residential area. As part of this project, the city wants to create a continuous footpath parallel to Scheffelstraße. To this end, a cul-de-sac that ends in front of a pavilion is to be extended by a good hundred metres to the cross-connection between Scheffelstrasse and Friedrich-Hähnel-Strasse and existing concrete seating blocks are to be set up as a "green classroom".
The wooden shelter, which has to make way for the footpath through the ravine, will be moved to a green area behind the Vita Centre, where the Parks Department will also rearrange the benches. Four deciduous trees were felled before the construction of the path in the Scheffel Gorge began. Provided the weather is favourable, the contractor will start work in March. The new footpath should be ready for use by the end of May. The construction department estimates the costs for this project at 42,300 euros.
