Replacement nest for Röhrsdorf white stork pair

Environmental Agency thanks all those involved for their quick and uncomplicated support

In addition to the two known white stork breeding pairs in the Grüna and Wittgensdorf districts, a third white stork pair began nesting in the Röhrsdorf district in April.

Unfortunately, the pair of storks had chosen an operating chimney to build their nest, so that the start of the nest had to be repeatedly removed for fire safety reasons.

Following information from citizens, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Environmental Agency immediately looked for a suitable nest site. Of several possibilities, the choice fell on an old aerial mast on Goetheweg. Thanks to the rapid approval of the landowner and the antenna operator, further preparations could be made immediately.

Employees of the nature conservation centre prepared the brushwood bundles for the nest base and two experienced rope climbers from the volunteer nature conservation service, Steffen Eidam and Mario Liebschner, carried out the installation at lofty heights. The construction of the replacement nesting site was completed just 48 hours after the location was determined on 8 May 2020.

The structure is a temporary nest base for the new stork pair, who were still in Röhrsdorf on that day. It is not yet clear whether the stork pair will accept the replacement nest. This could still happen by the summer. Or not until next year.

The region around Chemnitz is currently well accepted by storks for nesting, and pairs of storks have also been observed in Frankenberg and Auerswalde.

The stork pair in Wittgensdorf have been returning to their nest for 15 years. The stork pair in Grüna successfully bred there for the first time last year.
