Replacement construction of pedestrian bridge over the Zwönitz at Talsperrengrund in Einsiedel

On Tuesday 26 November at 3.30 pm, Mayor Michael Stötzer will inaugurate the new pedestrian bridge over the Zwönitz. This will re-establish the pedestrian link between Talsperrengrund and Einsiedler Hauptstraße. The new replacement was necessary because the old bridge was so badly damaged by the June floods in 2013 that it had to be dismantled

The pedestrian bridge over the Zwönitz behind the town hall in the Einsiedel district of Chemnitz was severely damaged by the floods in June 2013 and had to be dismantled as an emergency measure. The new construction began in September 2018. The total costs amount to around two million euros, which are being made available through funding from the Free State of Saxony to repair the damage caused by the 2013 floods. At the same time, the bridge meets the new, currently valid requirements, i.e. it can withstand a flood that statistically only occurs once every 100 years (HQ100). It will also be barrier-free.
Due to the large spans and the connection as well as with regard to the architectural design and function, it was decided to use lightweight construction principles. Lightweight construction is characterised by reduced weight while at the same time increasing the quality of use.
And so a 23 metre long truss bridge (steel supporting structure on top) with ramps on both sides (approx. 22 m and 17 m) and a bridge deck made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was developed and ecologically designed. (GRP) and manufactured in an ecologically/economically efficient manner with sustainable load-bearing structures.
The excellent cooperation with Chemnitz University of Technology deserves special mention here. Chemnitz University of Technology already had initial experience with various glass fibre-reinforced constructions and played a supporting and target-oriented role in the design and approval of components, both scientifically and technically. Chemnitz University of Technology was also significantly involved in the development of various detailed solutions.
The building contractor was Krause Co. Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau GmbH.
