Repair of the natural stone wall on Weststraße, Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff secondary school
In the 41st calendar week, work will begin on the Weststraße natural stone wall, the condition of which has caused the pavement to be restricted for some time.
The main causes of this condition are the existing earth pressure behind the wall, a partial material failure of the joint mortar and the root pressure from the horse chestnut tree above.
The retaining wall is located within the Kaßberg area monument and is a listed building. As part of the planning process, several expertises were carried out and renovation methods were examined in order to preserve the horse chestnut tree. However, as the stability of the tree could not be guaranteed, the monument protection authority authorised the repair of the wall and the felling of the chestnut tree after examining all conditions. Two new red horse chestnut trees were planted on the grounds of the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff grammar school at a sufficient distance from the new retaining wall. The wall will be faced with the existing natural stone so that the previous appearance is retained.
Restrictions on the flow of traffic are to be expected during the construction work, as all work can only be carried out from Weststraße. During the works, the pavement in the construction area will be closed and the width of the road will be reduced for the duration of the works. Pedestrians will be directed to the opposite side of the road and pedestrian traffic lights will be installed at the necessary road crossings.
A construction period of ten weeks is planned. The total cost of the project is around 150,000 euros. Günter Pompe GmbH from Hohenstein-Ernstthal was commissioned to carry out the work.
