Reopening of the "Reichenhainer Wichtelberg" daycare centre

Mayor Michael Stötzer will open the newly built daycare centre "Reichenhainer Wichtelberg", Am Hang 22 in 09125 Chemnitz, together with the provider (AWO) on Thursday, 15 October at 10 am.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to this event, which will include a tour of the building in accordance with the hygiene concept. The children of the daycare centre have prepared a small programme especially for this event. Please observe the general coronavirus protection measures.
A new building in place of the old daycare centre will increase the capacity from 38 to 56 places. Nine of these will be for children aged 1 to 3 years and 47 places for children aged 3 to 7 years. The daycare centre will open regularly from 2 November 2020 - one month earlier than originally planned. The children will then be able to enjoy light-flooded group rooms, modern sanitary facilities and a spacious outdoor area.
The daycare centre is run by the Workers' Welfare Association (AWO). The total cost of the building project is 3.39 million euros. The Free State's "Bridges to the Future" funding programme is contributing 921,000 euros to the project.
Background
In January 2018, the daycare centre moved into its temporary premises at Bernsdorfer Straße 120. The tree felling required for the construction work on the Am Hang 22 site took place in February 2018. In March 2018, the public tender for the main construction work had to be cancelled due to significant cost overruns and the construction work was halted for the time being. In the summer of 2018, alternative studies and parents' evenings were held to find a joint solution.
With the allocation of new funds in the 2019/2020 budget, the main construction work could be put out to tender again, meaning that nothing stood in the way of construction starting in spring 2019.
In order to create more capacity and meet the current spatial requirements for daycare centres, the old building was demolished and a larger new building was constructed.
