Renovation of the fountain at the Red Tower begins
Now that the fountain has been drained and thoroughly cleaned as planned after the city festival, the renovation work can begin in the next few days. Weather permitting - the installation of the sealing materials requires dry and mild days - the construction work for the first stage should be largely completed by the end of November 2017.
The facility, which was built in 1972 and extensively renovated in 2001, has experienced increasingly high water losses in recent years due to the leaking basin. There was also considerable damage due to vandalism.
The construction work will be carried out in stages. This will ensure that the fountain runs during the peak season. This year, work will begin on sealing the joints in the upper basin and the associated consequential damage to the natural stone panelling, as this is where the greatest water losses occur. The first vandalism damage will also be repaired. Planning and construction costs totalling 80,000 euros will be incurred for this construction phase.
The fountain system will go back into operation in late spring 2018 so that the 2018 summer season with the city festival and city anniversary can take place with the water features. Depending on the impact of the current measure, further renovation steps will then have to be discussed.
The renovation work is being carried out by the construction company Thomas Hübler, Dresden. The planning office Kretzschmar & Partner Freie Landschaftsarchitekten mbH, Dresden, was commissioned with the local construction supervision and also provided the planning services.
