Renovation of Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff Bridge over the Chemnitz and Fabrikstraße

First phase of the reconstruction of the vaults above Fabrikstraße completed - Photo opportunity: Setting the keystone, 27 March, 10 a.m.

On Wednesday, 27 March at 10 a.m., the keystone will be ceremoniously laid on the new vaults and work on them will be completed. This marks the completion of the first phase of the reconstruction of the vaults above Fabrikstraße.

Extensive dismantling work has been carried out on the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff Bridge in recent months. In August 2018, the old superstructure, a reinforced concrete slab, above Fabrikstraße was dismantled into segments and lifted out with the help of a crane. The existing steel scaffolding was replaced by a wooden shoring for the reconstruction of the new arches. The new sandstone vault is being erected on the supporting scaffolding. A stonemasonry company has been working on the new vaults for some time.


The next step is to lay the reinforcement for the new superstructure. This will be followed by the concreting of this section.


Work on the vaults over the Chemnitz runs parallel to the reconstruction of the vaults over Fabrikstraße. The balustrade on the bridge has been largely dismantled. Work on renewing the joints on the river side began last year. The vaults over the Chemnitz are currently being removed.


In the coming months, the arches will be reinforced with a layer of shotcrete. After that, the backfill will be rebuilt. Finally, the vaulted bridge will receive a new carriageway slab made of reinforced concrete.


The new staircase right next to the bridge is taking shape. Work on this construction phase is running alongside the other work. Following the demolition of the old staircase, construction of the new staircase has begun. Once the foundations and drainage system have been completed, the new stair stringers will be built.
