Renovation of Bahnhofstrasse/Zschopauer Strasse intersection including Johannisstrasse begins
After Whitsun, on Tuesday 25 May, construction work will begin on Bahnhofstraße in the city centre for the renewal of the Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße junction and the new construction of Johannisstraße.
Zschopauer Straße will be made much more compact at the junction with Bahnhofstraße. The extra-wide centre island will be reduced to the necessary traffic dimensions. The reduced centre island will be planted with trees. Within this project, construction sites will also be cleared for the planned inner-city developments and the requirements of the legally valid development plan "Neue Johannisvorstadt" (No. 15/17) will be implemented.
In addition to the complete renewal of the Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße junction, the Zschopauer Straße/Moritzstraße junction will be redesigned, the adjacent footpaths and cycle paths will be constructed and the existing bus stops will be made barrier-free. In addition, the pavement on the south side of Bahnhofstrasse from Wiesenstrasse to Augustusburger Strasse will be renewed. The traffic areas for pedestrians and cyclists will be redesigned and trees will be planted along Bahnhofstrasse to improve road safety and enhance the quality of life.
The Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße junction will be fitted with new traffic light control, while the Zschopauer Straße/Moritzstraße junction will be equipped with stationary traffic lights for the first time.
As a result of the change to the junction geometry, the entrance to Johannisstraße will also have to be rebuilt. Johannisstrasse will be designed in front of the new administrative building of utility company eins in accordance with the "Posthof, Johannisplatz, Rathausstrasse" development plan (No. 93/21) and planned as a 20 km/h zone. The surface design of the existing embankment will be continued accordingly.
The construction measures will be coordinated with the sewer renewal of the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz (ESC) in Bahnhofstraße and Zschopauer Straße as well as with inetz GmbH, which is carrying out extensive pipe laying in connection with the clearing of the construction sites for the "Neue Johannisvorstadt" development plan (No. 15/17). The work will be realised in a total of 18 construction lots.
The overall construction project comprises at least ten different construction phases, each of which will require changes to traffic routing, road closures or diversions.
Major traffic obstructions are to be expected in the construction area.
Road users are asked for their understanding and increased attention in the entire construction area.
The project should be completed by the end of November 2022.
The total construction costs for the city of Chemnitz amount to approx. 6 million euros.
