Renewal of traffic lights on Leipziger Straße
EU funding programme for the urban traffic management system - implementation of a further expansion stage begins
In Chemnitz, a further expansion phase is now beginning for the implementation of an EU funding programme to expand the city's traffic management system. The programme focuses primarily on measures to speed up local public transport. For the overall project, which was launched at the beginning of 2012 and has an estimated budget of 3.8 million euros, the European Union is providing grants from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) totalling 2.65 million euros. Within this framework, the renewal of the traffic lights to improve road safety and speed up bus route 21 on Leipziger Strasse is an important sub-project. To this end, the following traffic lights are to be realised in a further expansion stage in the section between Hartmannstraße and Winklerstraße by the end of May 2015:
- Hartmannstraße/Bergstraße ,
- Leipziger/Hartmannstraße ,
- Leipziger/Salzstraße ,
- Leipziger/Winklerstraße .
The total costs amount to approx. 450,000 euros.
Work began at the Leipziger/Winklerstraße traffic lights. The contractor is Stührenberg, Gera branch. Approx. 114,000 euros will be invested.
It is planned to complete the civil engineering work on this installation by 5 December. Road users please note the temporary traffic restrictions that are now necessary during the civil engineering work: One lane is currently closed on Leipziger Straße towards the land in the Winkler Straße area until probably Friday (21 November). Immediately after this construction phase, the restriction in the direction of the city centre will become necessary. Due to the closure of the right-hand lane, it will also not be possible to turn right into Winklerstraße in the direction of Luisenplatz. A diversion via Konradstraße will be signposted.
Once the civil engineering work has been completed (5 December), the new traffic lights will be installed, which will not cause any significant traffic restrictions for moving traffic - a separate press release will be issued when they are put into operation.
