Renewal of the traffic lights on Zschopauer/Lutherstraße and Dresdner/Frankenberger Straße

Both measures of the civil engineering office will begin tomorrow, Thursday; the planned completion of construction is 28 June 2013

Renewal of the Zschopauer Straße/Lutherstraße traffic lights to speed up bus routes 62/72 and improve road safety

As a result of investigations by the accident commission, this junction was identified as an accident blackspot (see also press release 202 dated 22 April 2013). Specifically, 41 traffic accidents had occurred in the last three years, in which four people were seriously injured and 17 were slightly injured. These were mainly turning accidents caused by a conflict between a vehicle turning left onto Zschopauer Straße and a driver travelling straight ahead from the opposite direction.

In order to defuse this, the accident commission has decided to guide left-turning drivers on Zschopauer Straße safely across the junction by means of a separate signal. In this context, it is necessary to reorganise the lanes on Zschopauer Straße, guide cycle traffic continuously and remove the green arrow sign on the eastern approach to Lutherstraße.

In addition to replacing the poles and renewing the cabling, further structural improvements will be implemented as part of the reconstruction of the traffic lights. The traffic light system will be converted to a traffic-dependent control system and the signal heads will be equipped with energy-saving, high-performance LED technology. In addition, the traffic light system will be technically equipped with so-called request devices to give priority to local public transport buses. This means that these buses, which are also equipped with the appropriate technology, will be able to pass the "reacting" traffic light system preferentially and therefore quickly in future.

Last but not least, sound signals will be integrated into the system for blind and visually impaired pedestrians and the outdoor facilities around the traffic lights will also be designed to be accessible to the disabled. For better orientation, studded and grooved plates, known as ground indicators, will be incorporated into the path around the system and the kerbs will be lowered to allow wheelchair users to pass without difficulty.

Cost of the construction measure: 102,000 euros.

Planned execution time: 16 May to 28 June 2013.
