Renewal of the Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße intersection, including Johannisstraße and Zschopauer Straße/Moritzstraße
At its meeting today, the city council decided to carry out a thorough renovation of the Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße junction, including Johannisstraße and Zschopauer Straße/Moritzstraße. Compared to the original plans for the junction remodelling, the overall measure was extended to include the remodelling and extension of Johannisstrasse.
An unscheduled appropriation of 850,000 euros was necessary for this. The total costs therefore amount to around six million euros.
The coordinated construction project by the City of Chemnitz, inetz GmbH and ESC is scheduled to last from the beginning of April 2021 to the end of September 2022. It will mainly take place with half-sided lane closures. However, temporary full road closures will also be necessary. The respective diversion routes will be announced in good time.
In order to improve road safety and enhance the quality of life, the traffic areas for pedestrians and cyclists will be redesigned and 58 trees will be planted. A large part of the traffic light system on Bahnhofstrasse/Zschopauer Strasse will have to be rebuilt. The Zschopauer Straße/Moritzstraße junction will have traffic lights for the first time. This will also largely correct existing night-time disadvantages for pedestrians and cyclists when crossing the carriageway.
The extended area of Zschopauer Straße in front of Bahnhofstraße will be made much more compact. This means that the extra-wide central island will be reduced. Trees will be planted on it. 180 metres of Zschopauer Straße and 40 metres of Moritzstraße will be completely rebuilt. Footpaths and cycle paths will be created on both sides.
The existing bus stops in the area (Stefan-Heym-Platz and Moritzstraße) will be made barrier-free with a dynamic passenger information system and a guidance system for the blind. The "Neue Johannisvorstadt" construction measures will require the relocation of supply and disposal lines.
In the Johannisstraße area, a passageway will be created to the administrative building of the utility company eins energie. Johannisstraße is planned as a 20 km/h zone. Public parking spaces, e.g. short-term parking spaces, will be reorganised. Three short-term car parks and twelve bicycle parking spaces will be created. The concept at the entrance to Johannisstraße provides for an access lane and two right-turn lanes at the exit to Bahnhofstraße. Areas with seating and shrubs will be created in front of the entrances to the eins energie customer centre and the commercial areas.
