Reminder: City congratulates Olympic athletes
Reception on 16 August at 3 pm at the Chemnitz Neumarkt
Tomorrow, the city of Chemnitz will welcome its Olympians at 3 pm on Chemnitz's Neumarkt square. All media representatives are cordially invited to attend.
After the welcome by Mayor Berthold Brehm, the presenters from Radio Chemnitz will review moving Olympic moments with the athletes. Shot putter and silver medallist David Storl will talk about his competition, as will hurdler Silvio Schirrmeister from the athletics club Erdgas Chemnitz. They will be accompanied by their coaches Sven Lang and Ulf Müller. Stefan Grützner, coach at the Chemnitz Athletes' Club, will also be on hand to answer questions.
The two Olympic athletes will sign the city's Golden Book. Afterwards, friends and fans can personally congratulate the Olympians at an autograph session.
Three medals for Chemnitz
World and European champion David Storl went into the competition with high expectations. He won the silver medal with 21.86 metres and had to concede the Olympic victory to Poland's Tomasz Majewski by just three centimetres.
Track cycling sprinter Maximilian Levy won two medals in London: Bronze in the team sprint and silver in the keirin. He was unable to attend the reception as he is currently competing in the German Track Cycling Championships in Frankfurt/Oder.
Silvio Schirrmeister was not so lucky. The only German starter in the 400 metres had already failed in the preliminary heat.
The spectators experienced a moment of shock at the Olympic appearance of weightlifter Matthias Steiner. During his attempt with 196 kilos, he was unable to hold the barbell. It hit him in the neck. The heavyweight was lucky and remained largely uninjured.
Shot putter Christina Schwanitz was the only German to qualify for the final and finished tenth with a distance of 18.47 metres.
