Relaxed parking at the zoo on Sundays and public holidays
Additional parking spaces on busy days
As of this month, visitors to Chemnitz Zoo travelling by car can also use the Sparkasse car park, Zwickauer Straße 452, Oberfrohnaer Straße entrance, and the Simmel-Markt car park, Zwickauer Straße 409, free of charge on Sundays and public holidays. In addition to the Tierpark car park, Nevoigtstraße 7/9*, free parking spaces are already available at the weekend in the car park of the DRK hospital, Unritzstraße/Am alten Weinberg.
In addition, it is planned to clearly and uniformly mark the parking spaces on the edge of the Nevoigtstraße carriageway in spring. Parking is only permitted within these markings. The aim is to improve compliance with the parking regulations.
These measures were developed in an extensive public participation process with local residents and neighbouring companies and were part of the BMDV research project NUMIC 2.0. Further information can be found at https://www.chemnitz.de/numic_nevoigtstrasse.
The background to this is that the parking situation in Nevoigtstraße impairs road safety, especially on busy days at the zoo. Despite the clear regulations in the Highway Code, people are repeatedly parking on the pavements in contravention of the rules. This endangers pedestrians. Parking on both sides also hinders the emergency services. When property access roads are blocked, residents are unable to access or leave their properties.
Further measures are currently being planned to ease the parking situation around the zoo. For example, the parking guidance system is to be adapted and the designated parking spaces around the zoo are to be publicised with a flyer and on the zoo's website.
