Relax into the summer holidays with a book

"Book Summer Saxony" starts on 12 June at the Central Library in the TIETZ - Invitation to the photo session

"When reading, I dive in" is the motto of the popular "Book Summer Saxony" holiday campaign, which traditionally opens around two weeks before the summer holidays. 500 brand new books will be available to borrow free of charge from Monday 12 June 2017 for all 11 to 16-year-olds with a thirst for reading. Whether fantasy novels, love stories, funny comic novels, adventure and mystery - there is something for every (reading) taste...

It's very easy and also very lucrative to become a club member, choose three books and read them during the holidays. At the closing party on 18 August 2017 at the "Atomino" club, all participants will receive the coveted certificate of reading competence, which is rewarded by German teachers in many schools and can be added to the application portfolio from year 8 onwards.

This holiday offer can also be used in the district libraries in the Vita Centre, in the Yorck area and in Einsiedel.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to the opening of "Buchsommer Sachsen" together with pupils from Georg-Weerth-Oberschule and Agricola-Gymnasium on Monday, 12 June at 10 a.m. for a photo session in the central library in the TIETZ.

Project information:

With its original American roots, the Book Summer has been run as a nationwide project since 2012 and is aimed in particular at young people who have previously had few leisure activities or who have limited opportunities to spend their summer holidays due to their social situation. The focus is on promoting the joy of reading and voluntary, self-directed reading among pupils in their free time. In 2017, 98 Saxon libraries are taking part in the successful summer holiday campaign.

Young people can register free of charge, easily and without a parental signature. With a club card, they can borrow from around 500 current, entertaining books for young people until 5 August.

Holiday fun that pays off! Anyone who has read three club books by the end of the holidays will receive their certificate, signed by the director of the city library and the head of the Saxon Education Agency, Chemnitz regional office, at the joint closing party on 18 August in the "Atomino" club.

Last year saw record participation. 593 children and young people between the ages of 10 and 16 registered for the reading promotion project and borrowed almost 2,400 books during the summer holidays

"Buchsommer Sachsen" is centrally organised by the German Library Association (Deutscher Bibliotheksverband e. V., Landesverband Sachsen) and funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts. The patron is the Saxon State Minister for Culture, Mrs Brunhild Kurth. The Chemnitz City Library Supporters' Association is supporting the project this year with 1,000 euros.
