Refurbishment of the running track in the athletics hall at the Sportforum
At its meeting today, the city council decided to renovate the running track in the athletics hall at the Sportforum. The costs amount to around 448,000 euros, of which 261,000 euros will be financed from sports funding. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2021 and after a construction period of around five months, the track is expected to be ready for use in December of the same year.
The circular running track is in a poor condition. A structural engineering report has identified damage to the wooden substructure caused by wood-destroying fungi and damage to the plywood panels caused by mould fungi. This damage is largely caused by the lack of horizontal structural waterproofing. Cracks in the plywood are the result. Due to the thick, glued-on sports floor covering, the damage has so far remained concealed and has not led to the floor collapsing. There have been no accidents so far.
It was agreed with the athletes that the running track would be completely renewed, including the substructure. At the same time, the fencing in the bend areas, the sports flooring for the run-up tracks of the long jump, triple jump and high jump facilities and five take-off boxes, including the dummy beams, are to be renewed. These are worn out after 20 years of use.
