Refurbishment of the running track in the athletics hall at the Sportforum

Construction starts on 14 June 2021

The construction start-up consultation for the renovation of the running track in the athletics and multi-purpose hall at the Sportforum took place today. Construction work will begin on Monday, 14 June. Firstly, the sports flooring will be removed. From mid-July, the substructure will be dismantled and replaced. The new sports flooring will then be laid and provided with new lines. The jumping pits will also be renewed.

The extensive refurbishment measures were determined together with the athletes. In this context, the fencing in the bend areas, the sports flooring for the run-up tracks of the long jump, triple jump and high jump facilities and five jump boxes, including the dummy bars, will also be renewed. After a construction period of around five months, the facility is expected to be ready for use in December.

The circular running track was in a poor condition. A structural expert report had identified damage to the wooden substructure caused by wood-destroying fungi and damage to the plywood panels caused by mould. This damage was largely caused by the lack of horizontal structural waterproofing. Cracks in the plywood were the result. Due to the thick, glued-on sports floor covering, the damage had remained concealed and had not led to the floor collapsing.

In December 2020, the city council decided to renovate the running track in the athletics hall at the Sportforum. The costs amount to around 448,000 euros, of which 261,000 euros will be financed from sports funding.
