Refurbishment of the Janusz Korczak School completed
The refurbishment of the Janusz Korczak School, which specialises in mental development, has been completed. The GDR-style building from the 1980s was converted into a modern, barrier-free school building at a cost of around 4.7 million euros, of which around 2.3 million euros was subsidised. Shortly before the start of the school year, the tradesmen completed their work in the school building after a construction period of almost two years. At times, the process came to a standstill due to the pandemic, for example due to bottlenecks with suppliers for the linoleum flooring, electrical switches and sockets, ceiling panelling and painting supplies. The construction companies made up for the resulting delays by the start of the school year. Only work on the exterior still needs to be completed by the autumn.
The building had to be adapted to the spatial requirements of a school. For example, this concerned the construction heights of the floors and ceilings. Access routes also had to be created. The school building was given a new main entrance. This is where the administration is located. There is a visual connection from the stairwell to the secretary's office through glazed doors, which enables good access control. The north-facing orientation of the building entrance provides an optimal overview of the arrival of the transport services, which are used to transport the majority of pupils, as well as the departure of pupils. Special structural room solutions were found for the classrooms - i.e. groups of rooms were arranged according to their functions.
A maximum of ten pupils per class learn here. Pupils' conditions have also been improved by further adaptations, including a colour-coded building orientation system. In addition, special building acoustics reduce the noise in the school building, making it easier for the children to concentrate on their lessons. As well as these sound insulation improvements, the building now also fulfils fire protection, safety and thermal insulation requirements. The school has a doctor's room and a therapy room as well as a group and quiet room. In addition to a kitchenette, the Janusz Korczak School also has a spacious dining room.
