Refurbished playgrounds are completed
The City of Chemnitz Parks Department is renovating numerous playgrounds throughout the city. The following playgrounds can already be used by children again or will soon be able to do so:
- Reichenhainer Mühlberg playground in Chemnitz-Reichenhain
The Reichenhainer Mühlberg playground has been redesigned. A climbing combination has been installed as new play equipment. This invites children to let off steam with several climbing walls, a spider's web, a 45-degree ramp with a retaining rope and a wall bars. The existing play equipment had previously been dismantled. In addition, fall protection gravel was installed on the playground, grass was laid and shrubs were planted.
The facility has been open for use since the beginning of April. Construction work began at the beginning of December 2019 and cost around 55,000 euros.
The project was realised by the Chemnitz-based company Liebscher & Partner.
- Playground facility on the corner of Lortzingstraße/Haydnstraße in Chemnitz-Kapellenberg
The playground has been redesigned while preserving the existing trees.
Children now have access to a new slide tower, a nest swing, a double swing and two climbing frames for different age groups.
The paths and seating areas have been redesigned and some have been replanted with shrubs.
The lawn area has been extended and now invites children to play freely on the newly modelled slide hill. A table tennis table, located slightly away from the play area, completes the range of games on offer.
The construction work was carried out by Techno-Farm und Service GmbH. The new facility was planned by JACOB + BILZ Landschaftsarchitekten.
Construction began in October 2019 and the building and planting work was largely completed by the end of December 2019. Remaining landscaping work will continue until 30 June 2020.
The newly created vegetation areas will be maintained by the contractor up to and including 30 October 2020. The total costs for planning, construction and planting services as well as the production and installation of the play equipment amount to approx. 198,000 euros (including path construction).
- Otto-Werner-Garten playground
The Otto-Werner-Garten playground in the city park was renovated and refurbished after 20 years, creating a new play and leisure facility in the city park on the Chemnitz River. As part of a play equipment competition agreed with the users, the "Pirate Island - Shipwreck" theme - a combination of several play options and functions - was realised on the Chemnitz River. The main play equipment is suitable for sliding, climbing, balancing and hiding as well as role play. Oak wood was used as the material for the multifunctional play equipment.
The paths have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the heritage conservation authorities. In addition, 40 cm thick fall protection gravel on the play area now cushions potential falls. Prior to this, the existing climbing route on the site as well as the boards and paving were demolished.
Landscape architect Ullrich Krüger from Dresden was commissioned with the planning. The work was carried out by Landschaftsbau-Gruenbau Ltd. from Bad Schlema. The play equipment was manufactured by Grasreiner Design from Dresden.
The new facility, which covers around 400 square metres, is due to go into use in June 2020. Construction began in February 2020 and the costs for the landscaping and play equipment totalled around 141,000 euros. The measure is subsidised by urban development funds.
- Playground "Street Usti nad Labem 199"
The playground will be redesigned as a near-natural landscape that invites children to explore and play freely. The existing trees will be preserved.
A stand-up roundabout, a sandpit and a multi-climbing facility with slide, co-financed by the citizens' platform, complement the natural play landscape of hills, bushes and stones. This gives children the opportunity to play in nature and have adventures in the densely populated neighbourhood.
The play area is being redesigned and will consist of landscaped ground modelling with boulders and new large play equipment (including a slide and climbing facilities) as well as a standing carousel made of stainless steel.
In addition, 27 shrubs will be planted in the area.
The work is due to be completed in June 2020. Construction started at the beginning of May this year.
The work is being carried out by Landschaftsbau-Gruenbau Ltd. in Bad Schlema. The construction costs amount to approx. 60,000 euros.
The citizens' platform "Bürgernetzwerk Chemnitz-Süd" had already decided in 2019 to finance a large piece of play equipment from the citizens' platform's budget in order to be able to create an extended range of activities in the playground area.
