Redesign of the passenger tunnel under the main railway station begins with initial work

Tunnel Dresdner Straße and Mauerstraße ("Bazillenröhre") for pedestrians and cyclists: full closure from 17 October to 4 November 2016

A design upgrade is planned for the pedestrian tunnel between Dresdner Strasse and Mauerstrasse as a connecting axis between Sonnenberg and the city centre. Following the winning design of a competition held for this purpose, LED light strips with different light colours are to be installed to indirectly illuminate the tunnel space via the ceiling.

In November, a lighting test will be carried out to determine how this winning design can be implemented, taking into account the structural conditions and technical lighting requirements. As a prerequisite for the test, various construction measures must be carried out in the coming weeks to prepare a sample area, meaning that the tunnel will be fully closed from 17 October to 4 November 2016.

The upcoming measures mainly involve sandblasting and painting work. As the scaffolding required to set up the construction site will take up the entire tunnel cross-section, it will not be possible to use the tunnel to a limited extent during the construction period. The entire remodelling work is due to be completed in the course of next year.

Note for editorial offices: Details on the lighting concept can be found in press release no. 732/2015 dated 04.12.2015.
