Redesign of the Brühl Boulevard
Construction work began last week
In the section of Brühl Boulevard from Elisenstrasse to Zöllnerstrasse, work has begun on redesigning the characteristic open space elements, improving access, enhancing the quality of stay and constructing a new water basin with the installation of new fountain technology.
The boulevard is designated as a pedestrian zone from Georgstrasse to Untere Aktienstrasse. The remaining section up to Zöllnerstrasse is a traffic-calmed area and should be driven at walking speed.
The construction section is approx. 100 metres long and up to 22.50 metres wide. It will be designed in line with the design principles and equipment elements of the first section realised in 2016.
The existing platform will be adapted in terms of accessibility, spatial and utilisation quality. Customised seat rings and seat cubes will be integrated into the planting discs of the trees as new open space furnishings and bicycle leaning brackets, benches, litter bins and dog waste bag dispensers will be installed. The Brühl luminaires will be upgraded to provide the necessary traffic area illumination.
As traffic-calming elements, two areas in the Brühl-Zöllnerstraße junction will be raised by 8 cm, similar to the ramp stones on the forecourt of the Rosa Luxemburg primary school.
The existing water basins will be demolished and a new basin built. The fountain sculpture "Wasserspiel" by artist Reinhard Grütz (1980) will be reinstalled in the fountain.
The tree felling work was already carried out in February 2018 as preparatory work, and the redesign work to complete the Brühl Boulevard is currently underway. In general, it is not expected to be a continuous construction site. Rather, the project is made up of many individual measures that are being cordoned off separately. Completion is planned for October 2018.
Tree planting and further planting of the tree discs will take place after construction is completed from October 2018.
Schmidt-Bau GmbH from Augustusburg was commissioned with the construction work. The construction costs amount to approx. 480,000 euros.
One third of the construction costs are being financed by the federal and state programme "Active Urban and District Centres".
