Recognising bird calls with your smartphone

On Saturday, 22 April, from 3 to 4.30 pm, interested parties are invited to a lecture on the topic "Who's chirping? - How computers learn to recognise birds by their song" at the Botanic Garden, Leipziger Straße 147. Dr Stefan Kahl, the developer of the "BirdNET" app, will explain how artificial intelligence can identify native birds by their song and contribute to species conservation at the same time. Afterwards, the app will be tried out on a walk together in the neighbouring woodland.

With the free "BirdNET" app, anyone can recognise the local birds in their garden and forest by their song - simply record the bird calls with the app and have the respective species displayed. Behind the simple application of the analysis software lies a complex development. "BirdNET" was developed by Dr Stefan Kahl at the Chair of Media Informatics at Chemnitz University of Technology. It serves as a research platform that uses artificial intelligence and a huge collection of audio data to improve the classification of bird calls, among other things. Dr Stefan Kahl will show how the development of such an app works, how computers can learn to identify birds and how the app can innovatively support conservationists and biologists in their work and how each individual can automatically contribute to species conservation by using it.
